Sharing our Herstory
How do we make the magic happen?
Joy-Ray-Flo is a unique enterprise where we work by a principle of invitation. If our values of caring for kids, caring for country and doing business better resonate with you, we welcome you to reach out so we can work side by side to share knowledge and create solutions for you and your community.
Karina is a renowned solution broker with expertise in creatively designing community led initiatives that create change. Working with her daughter MK, side by side for the past eight years, means that MK has grown with the same passion to shine as a leader and light the way for other children and young people. At just 8 years of age, MK has already developed her experience in leading creative circles for NAIDOC events for fellow students and hosting Storytime sessions for little learners at childcare centres.

Meet the Mermaids
“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are an ocean in a drop.” ― Joy N. Hensley
Karina Lee Gray was born in Jambinu / Geraldton and loved her first years in Kalbarri. As she grew Karina travelled the country and world seeking models making a difference and has built a career focused on listening and knowledge sharing, with an each one-teach one philosophy. In 2010, Karina founded a social impact enterprise in the tropical north, Starwin. Karina embraced opportunities to collaborate and lead consultation projects, grow safe spaces for a collective for women in enterprise to shine, establish circular economy initiatives and coach exceptionally talented young footballers to premierships. Starwin was the NTs first B Corp, in 2021 won a Brolga Award for best Tourism Retail outlet and in 2023 was a solo winner of the Aus Post Local Business Hero award in the Territory. The footprint of this enterprise has been far reaching from the Kimberley to the Daintree.
Now having returned to her birthplace in 2023, Karina would happily spend her days walking by the sea, reading and writing books and watching wildflowers grow, except her little one has big dreams, and having clearly taken over as the boss in the family, she is demanding more! Karina believes all women should have the opportunity to do what they love, where they love - so accepting of her new role, is now looking forward to working on creative / consultation projects with community leaders and curating new kin & co collections.
Maresa Karlee Palipuaminni was born in Darwin, with Tiwi, Yanyuwa (paternal) and Jewish (maternal) heritage and is affectionately known as MK. A footy team mascot, and Starwin shopfront staffer from day one, she was a staunch leader by age two, telling us all what to do. Her first word was turtle, she learnt to weave at four, could hunt for crabs by five (appearing on a Getaway episode in the mangroves), performed at her school concert singing in Yanyuwa language and debuted as a children's clothing designer by age six. As a fierce advocate for caring for country, as of age eight she plans to be a marine scientist, then a fashion designer and a musician and AFLW player in her near future, or maybe all of those at once. For now, she loves painting and creating and being a student councillor.
Having learnt so much from her elders and family, her aspirations include leading storytime sessions and cultural learning circles for little ones. Clearly also an aspiring director, she often starts her day by leaving notes for Mum, so she knows exactly what to do.

Together, Karina and MK are learning to speak Tiwi more fluently, singing along to Busby Marou on road trips, frequently swimming in the sea, coaching/playing in the Year 3 side for Chapman Valley Football Club and discovering more of their family history. Having both experienced deep trauma, they believe in the magic of mermaids and rainbows and dedicate their days to defending joy and find new ways of healing. Planting trees and returning starfish back to the sea are just some of the ways they care for country.

Kin + Co
We aim to create social impact by providing opportunities for young women in our extended family to showcase their creative talents. Our big dream is to generate investment in an 'Island TYM' (Tiwi Youth Movement) initiative.
You will find designs and stories from our kin interwoven in the work we do, products we offer and sessions we host. This is our way of nurturing community, naturally.
