Engagement & Education

Artists in Schools Project, Xavier Catholic College x Wangatunga Women, Wurrimiyanga, Tiwi Islands, 2021

Karina co-designed the project to create an inter-generational cultural experience for disengaged students. Working with the school, we successfully applied for funding, provided administrative support and prepared content for the acquittal. The woven creations that were produced are now displayed proudly in the school reception area.

"The Weaving Project has connected community and Xavier young women in a very meaningful way. Each week that the Strong Women come in to sit, talk and weave with the students, there is a special feeling of peace and joy that comes over the library floor where everyone is sitting. The young women are relaxed, happy and respectful in the presence of these much-loved elders and much laughter ensues from learning to thread needles, getting the needles through the pandanus and learning the very complex intertwining that is part of the weaving works. Whilst sharing their craftsmenship skills, the Strong Women tell stories of when they were girls, what life was like in Mission Days and at school, and our young people are enthralled. It is as if some of the sadness of the students’ daily lives lifts when old and young are together in a safe, nurturing space. The Project has been very successful on so many levels – culturally, spiritually, from a women’s point of view. I am sure the memories created from this project and captured in the woven buttons, will live on in the hearts and minds of Xavier young women." ~ Andree Rice, Principal at Xavier Catholic College (2021)

Planning & Partnerships

We met Esmee, founder of Health Empower Australia via the Emersyn Emerge program for female entrepreneurs in WA. After an initial consult session in May 2024, we identified ways we could add cultural safety in the spaces Health Empower work in, supplying herbs & spices from our partner, Warndu.

"We recently engaged with Karina at to incorporate Indigenous herbs into our children's nutrition learning program, and the experience has been exceptional. From the start, the customer service was impeccable. She was knowledgeable and patient to assist us in selecting the right herbs to complement our curriculum.

Karina's commitment didn’t end with the sale; she followed up consistently to ensure everything was working well, herbs arrived on time and enjoyed by our clients and children in their care. This level of dedication and attention to detail is truly commendable.

We are immensely grateful for her services and the positive impact it has had on children's understanding of nutrition and Indigenous culture. We highly recommend Starwin to anyone looking to enrich their educational programs with quality, Indigenous herbs and outstanding support. Thank you Karina. We look forward to working with you again." ~ Esmee Ng, Founder, Health Empower

Impact

In 2023 we curated and launched the 'Ruth' collection. Made by hand, in Australia, this organic children's collection was designed by MK Palipuaminni, honouring her ancestoral connections to Tiwi & Yanyuwa country. We hosted a pop up space in Jambinu in September 2023 to showcase the collection & early learning resources. The collection is being sold via MK Eco by Starwin (Darwin shopfront), with proceeds supporting the Indi Kindi program in Borroloola.
